BASIC SETTINGS and THINGS TO CHECK for
on The ROSBACK PERFECT BOOK BINDER
MACHINE MODELS 880, 880F & 882
At the factory a dial test indicator is fixed to the clamp to check most of
the settings listed below.
If this method is used in the field then the clamp must be check first to
ensure that there is no movement of the clamp in the up and down directions on
the V-rails, the clamp must move along the V-rails smoothly. To check this
remove the shoulder screw from the drive chain and move the clamp manually. If
necessary adjust the two upper V-rollers that are mounted on eccentric bushings.
CAUTION!: Keep fingers clear of the
book clamp. The clamp will close even when moved manually and may cause serious
injury. Remove the front clamp plate before moving the clamp manually.
SAW BLADE SETTINGS:
- The saw blade teeth at the LH side are 0.010" higher than the RH
side. Also the saw blade teeth are 0.045" higher than the machined top
of the cast aluminum housing surrounding the saw blade. To adjust the saw
blade height shims (part# 221-240) are used between the end of the motor
shaft and the saw blade arbor.
- The saw blade teeth (front to back) are square to the surface of the back
clamp plate.
- Whenever the saw blade is renewed or sharpened this setting must be
checked and if necessary adjusted.
SAW BLADE (THINGS TO CHECK):
- The saw blade must be sharp and in good condition with no glue between
the teeth from previous mishaps. The saw blade gate is a renewable piece
of brass under the saw blade rear cover plate on the LH side where the saw
blade teeth go under the rear cover plate.
- The saw blade gate supports the book pages that are closest to the rear
clamp plate and stops them from being pushed away by the saw blade as they
are being cut.
- The saw blade teeth are extremely close to the saw blade gate.
- The saw blade gate does wear and must be checked periodically and re-cut
or replaced especially when the saw blade is renewed or sharpened.
REGISTER TABLE SETTINGS:
- The register table surface is square to the surface of the back clamp
plate and parallel to the left to right movement of the clamp.
- When the register table is adjusted fully down the saw blade LH teeth are
5/32" higher than the surface of the register table. This is the
maximum cut depth for the saw.
- Also when the register table is adjusted fully up the saw blade LH teeth
are lower than the surface of the register table, therefore enabling the
machine to be set for padding.
GLUE POT SETTINGS:
- When the glue pot is set to its maximum height position the crown of the
LH glue roller is level with the LH saw blade teeth. The crown of the RH
glue roller is 0.015" lower than the LH glue roller.
GLUE POT (THINGS TO CHECK):
CAUTION!: Molten glue is extremely hot and will stick to clothing and bare
skin. The gluepot and cover can reach temperatures high enough to cause
injury. Use caution when working in the gluepot area. Avoid contact with glue
and gluepot surfaces.
- The glue pot should set to apply an even layer of glue along the spine
of the loose pages. A larger bead of glue across the leading spine edge
than at the trailing end is an indication that the glue rollers are
turning too slow. A larger bead of glue across the trailing spine edge
than at the leading end then this is an indication that the glue rollers
are turning too fast. Ideally the bead of glue at both ends of the spine
should be equal.
- The wires at the RH side of the glue pot help to stop any strings of
glue from being dragged onto the nipper assembly.
- When using Rosback supplied adhesive for perfect binding (part# 880-400)
the glue temperature should be between 310 deg.F and 350 deg.F. The glue
will be thicker at lower temperatures. Above 350 deg.F the glue will
produce visible fumes, and there is a good possibility of discoloring and
burning the glue.
- To check the temperature of the glue, heat the gluepot until it reaches
its set temperature, and run the glue rollers for at least 10 minutes.
With the rollers running, suspend a candy thermometer in the molten glue.
Do not touch the bottom or sides of the glue pot. After a few minutes
check that the temperature matches the heater control setting.
For Rosback Glue #880-400 an application temperature of around
325 Deg.F is correct to bind most books.
BOOK BRUSH (THINGS TO CHECK):
- The book brush is located between the saw blade and the glue pot.
- The brush removes the paper dust from the sawn spine and helps to stop
the paper dust from contaminating the glue pot. The brush must be in good
condition and free from paper dust and glue. The air chamber under the
brush in the cast aluminum housing should be clear from obstructions.
NIPPER SETTINGS:
- The nipper center plate is square to the surface of the back clamp plate
and parallel to the left to right movement of the clamp.
- The nipper center plate is 0.010" below the saw blade LH teeth.
ROUGHER SETTINGS:
- The roughers in the saw blade arbor are set to 1/32" higher than the
saw blade tip.
ROUGHER (THINGS TO CHECK):
- The roughers put grooves across the spine for better glue adhesion to the
book pages. The roughers must be sharp and at the correct setting.
- The roughers in the saw blade arbor are set to 1/32" higher than the
saw blade tip. Underneath the rougher tip is a small spring (S-1164) that
pushes the tip up when the securing screw is released as long as the hole is
clear of paper dust and contaminates.
- The securing screw locates against a flat on the side of the rougher tip;
this ensures the correct orientation of the tip.
- Generally for book spines of one inch or less one rougher should be
sufficient, for book spines that are larger than one inch two roughers are
recommended.
